The course is designed to familiarize students with particularities and with the most important authors of Spanish and Spanish American theatre from their beginnings till nowadays, with special attention to the 19th and 20th century currents and to the basic theory of theatre. The course also includes a detailed analysis of a list of works.

Spanish theatre:
- characteristics of the Spanish theatre from its beginnings till the Golden Era
Romanticism: characteristics and main representatives; Don Juan
20th century:
- bourgeois theatre of the transition to the 20th century
- »poetic« theatre
- renewers: Ramón del Valle-Inclán
- Federico García Lorca
- postwar traditional and realistic theatre, reaction against realism and »new theatre«
- tendencies in contemporary theatre

Spanish American theatre:
20th century:
- main tendencies at the beginning of the century: realism and experimentalism
- independent theatre schools
- realism; epic theatre
- historical theatre and Theatre of the Absurd
- latest tendencies: collective script and »miscelánea«
