The course aims to situate Japanese society as a specific problem field within the sphere of social sciences. During the course the students will familiarise themselves with the particularities and changes in Japanese society and culture from 1945 onward. Topics to be covered include the development of political institutions; social stratification; modalities of employment and their social influences; political economy of Japan: market, politics, particular agendas, distribution of power; internationalisation of Japanese society and the politics of migration: the role and position of foreigners in Japanese society; gender and generational differences; popular culture.
